Fan Faces of K-pop!
(Hover over each picture for more information!)
Paramount/Butterfly Lighting:
My model's cheek bones are really brought out with this lighting. |
Loop Lighting:
THis lighting gave my model a bright complexion, with a small subtle loop on the left side. |
Rembrant/45 Degree Lighting:
It's not as bright as the Loop Lighting, perfect for getting that cool feeling hip-hop brings. You can see the soft cheek-triangle on the right cheek, but its covered a bit by the hat. |
Split:
The left side is dark, the right side is light, showing two sides to this crazy fan! |
Reflection: There are many different types of fans out there! I tried to represent how diverse fans in k-pop are in this project, and gave my model fan merchandise to wear to show what type of band each fan would listen to. My favorite to shoot was the crazy fan, with the duct tape. I didn't assign the crazy fan a band because there are crazy fans everywhere! Every band has at least one crazy fan. I love how the lighting makes Ivy look so twisted even though she's such a sweet girl in real life! The split lighting makes one side almost look normal, shadowed by the other side that is bright and twisted for the world to see!

Sequence Photography
Original Sequence
My original sequence is based off of a music video for the song "Sherlock" by SHINee. Through the song the band members dance and travel across the room in poses and so I taught my model Ivy some of the moves for this sequence. In one of their live performances they wear the same clothes but play around with having their jackets in different places so we messed around with the placement of her clothes to give it that effect. I chose this area because in the music video they're in a museum with gothic type high windows. So I wanted to go to a high up place with big windows! The plants in the right were a thing I added after I noticed their presence in the hall. It helps frame it and bring your eye to the place of focus. I like leaving the left window in the frame instead of cropping it out because it adds depth, and shows the shadows more.

White Balance
Narrative Photography
This project is biased on the power of friendship, and how it outlast even the hardest of times. I chose a white background because I wanted to make these moments relatable. It can happen to anyone, any where, and the white background leaves it up to the viewers imagination. I picked a lot of iconic things that friends do together and created a story behind them, continuing where Ivy's left off.

Reflection 1:
Describe- It's a picture of me, reading a book while sitting in a car. Is it just that, though? Analyze- It's a self portrait where the camera angle is turned to that it looks like I'm sitting up, but I'm not. The image is cropped so you don't see my hair. If it wasn't like that it would ruin the illusion. I left the decoration on the rear-view mirror to throw the image off. It uses the rule of thirds because the subject, myself, is orientated to one side of the picture. Interpret- The purpose it to confuse you a bit, and to make you think about the photo and figure out what's going on. No real strong message. Judge- After showing my parents and watching their heads turn in confusion, I have concluded that this is a successful photograph. The hardest part was actually taking the picture. I propped my camera up on the door handle of the car and set it on timer so I had to quickly get into place in enough time. Maybe next time I'll use a model or a tripod. |
Reflection 2:
Describe- It's a picture of me feeding soup to a k-pop star, but am I really? Analyze- This photo uses layering to confuse the eye into thinking that the two things are real. The only thing real is the spoon with the soup, the person behind it is from a music video when I had to pause it to let it buffer. Interpret- The purpose is to make you laugh, it just looks silly. The singer is in the middle of singing a high note, and doesn't look at all like he's eating. Even if he was eating, he looks upset about it. Almost like a little kid refusing to eat food he doesn't like. These aspects are what makes it funny. Judge- I had a lot of fun with these. I had to pause the same video a few other times, and had some fun with those moments as well. You can see them in the slide show to the right. I like them a lot, I hope you do too. |

Reflection
In this collection, my eyes are always drawn toward the second bird's eye view photo of Ivy in the bottom right corner. I caught her off guard, randomly standing up in my chair during a work day in photography class, and told her to look up. I captured her natural smile, and a little bit of her work ethic. She was so caught up in her work she didn't even notice I was on the chair until I said her name. I attempted to re-create it, but none of the other photos could compare to the first one. It's interesting because most people don't think to take portraits from directly above them.

Composition
[1] Pattern-
Describe: I had to demonstrate composition through pattern. This is a lamp with a repeating a ring pattern and brown bamboo background. Analyze: The pattern of the rivets on the lap and of the light on it repeats. The dark color is on contrast with the light background. Interpret: I was just trying to get this photo a simple, yet sophisticated look. Judge: I wasn't trying to make a point with this photo but I think I showed pattern well. I liked how the dark lamp gives an ominous feel. ______________________ [2] Rule of Thirds- Describe: A hill during the sunrise of the morning with streaky clouds overhead. Analyze: The sun lines up in a corner with the horizon, and on the other side the house and a tree lines up too. Interpret: I wanted to catch the glaring light of every morning. It may be hard to wake up, and you don't know what the day will bring, but a new beginning is always beautiful. Judge: It seemed to look better with the grid. I think I did well. _______________________ [3] Fill the Frame- Describe: My cat Boris curled up in a little ball as he sleeps. Analyze: His little body fits in the frame almost perfectly. Interpret: This photo shows how into sleeping cats can be, and what simple creatures they are. Judge: I believe this was a successful picture. I always get an "aw" from people when I show them. Closing it in close on him like that really makes you feel close to the kitty that you just want to pet him. ______________________ [4] Symmetry- Describe: A lamp post set against a blue sky. Analyze: This lamp post down town is the same on each side, demonstrating symmetry. Interpret: Lamp posts are strong things that withstand all kinds of weather. From this angle against the light sky the lamp post is supposed to give a feeling of strength. Judge: It shows symmetry well, I just wish I was a little taller so I could get a more direct photo. _____________________ [5] Simplify- Describe: An orange monarch butterfly sitting on a purple flower. Analyze: In this photo of the butterfly sitting on lavender, there are no distractions to take a away from its beauty. Interpret: I was trying quickly get this picture of this beautiful butterfly before it flew away, which is why its at an interesting angle. It shows that beauty is in fleeting moments. Judge: With its bright color your eyes stay at the butterfly. The camera focused on the butterfly and blurred the ground in the background. Taken at a different angle there would be students in the way, or my own feet to distract you from the picture. I think it was very successful! |
My favorite photo of this collection is number 10, the one of my cat Boris awaking from his nap. He's an old cat, and I can rarely capture a moment where he's alert like that. I think his favorite place in the world is up there. The way he looks when he's in his perch is like nothing else. As he's aged, he hasn't been able to do much anymore, but up there he looks as though he feels like he can do anything. I love this moment when he lifted his head briefly, looked out like he was king, and then sat back down once he realized his kingdom was in order. It was in the category simplify, and a picture of him in a common place can't get any simpler; a cats life can be so simple. But to him, it's much more than that, and that's why this photo is my favorite.

[6] Leading Lines-
Describe: A shady area behind the bleachers with a boy standing at the end of a breezeway. Analyze:The poles and sharp diagonal shadows all point to the boy at the end of the walkway. Interpret: It gives a sense of loneliness, having the boy all by himself in all that space. Judge: I really liked how the shadow pointed directly at him and the pillars lead to him and end at him. ______________________ [7] Fill the Frame- Describe: This is a close up on my friends face to show her pretty eye color and freckles. Analyze: Her hair and face spills out of the frame, completely filling it with her image. Interpret: The picture leaves you wondering about her because you only see half of her face and that smirk. The photograph is intended to make you wonder, and be mysterious. Judge: She is the only thing shown so I think I accomplished the task of fill the frame the best with this photo. _______________________ [8] Symmetry- Describe: A black iron gate with a design on it that I saw outside of a restaurant. Analyze: This gate is symmetrical on either side from the bar down the center. Interpret: Not a whole lot of meaning to it, just to show the beauty of intricate metal work. Judge: The photograph clearly shows symmetry. It served its purpose well for this project. ________________________ [9] Asymmetry- Describe: This is a picture of an orange butterfly with a damaged wing sitting on a yellow flower with green leaves around it. Analyze: This picture has complimentary colors to draw your eye to the butterfly. It shows asymmetry due to the fact that its the same on either side except for the part of the wing that is hurt. Interpret: The butterfly is hurt because of pollution, or another creature. We may not know why but the photo is to show the beauty in imperfections. Judge: It effectively shows how asymmetry is beautiful, and that it means that its ok for things to be different it's what makes you original. ________________________ [10] Simplify- Describe: My kitty has awoken from his nap atop his perch. Analyze: He's high up so only simple walls are the background. Interpret: The idea was to get him as his senses are awakened, as the haze clears from his mind and he looks down over the living room alert and in slight confusion. I wanted to get this expression before he relaxed and came to a realization. Judge: It's definitely simple because it's just him doing his own cat thing. There's nothing much to distract you, and his alert ears grab your attention first before anything. |
Elements of Art
Reflection
Most of my photos for this project ended up being of still life, excluding the one of my cat. The elements of art were most easily found in things instead of people. In the collection, color is found all around in each of them except for a few that are mainly black and white. The two I took for color are of flowers because plants tend to have the most vibrant colors.
I tried to keep in mind the rule of thirds, keeping the things of focus off to one side or corner of the frame. I made the two photos of the stairs "book-end" the gallery so that it draws your eyes through the entire collection. A lot of the photos could have been used for other areas, so I tried to pick the ones that fit each category the best.
I was trying to keep the photos for my first project kind of simple so to show the simplicity of life around us. The photos are of common objects and things in our lives that we often pass by. We don't usually enjoy the beauty of them in that moment. As time goes on, things change. Flowers wilt, rocks break down, pets pass on, stairs get painted, and buildings get remodeled. So my group of photos show things as they originally are in their common form, preserved over time before they whiter away and/or change.
Maybe I could be a little more complex with my photos in the future. I look at my inexperience as room to grow. I'm looking forward to improving my skills as I begin this year in photography class. I think my weakest piece is the photograph of the rocks for Organic Shape/Form. My eyes don't immediately go to the biggest rock on top as intended. I hope to find ways to enhance the main focus of my photographs in the future.
(Tip: If you can't find the captions, hover over the photo you desire to see the caption for and it should appear over it in a shadowy black box. You can also click on the photo and read the caption there in the pop up window. ^.^ )
